As economic disparities in urban India continue to widen, grassroots organisations are stepping up to address the growing needs of vulnerable populations. One such initiative, the Manabik Foundation, has emerged as a notable effort in West Bengal.

The initiative comes at a time when India’s urban-rural divide and economic inequalities are under increasing scrutiny. Despite significant progress in poverty reduction over the past decades, the country remains home to approximately 10% of the world’s poorest people, according to recent data. The COVID-19 pandemic has further deepened these challenges, pushing millions into poverty and exacerbating social isolation, particularly in urban areas where informal workers and low-income families have been disproportionately affected.

The foundation provides free meals and community activities to underprivileged individuals, including homeless people, low-income families, and informal sector workers.

Volunteers organize simple, fun games like sack races, relay games, and quizzes to bring joy.

Founded in 2024 by Joy Biswas and officially registered under India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs in August 2024, the foundation has quickly expanded its reach. What began as a small-scale effort serving 90 beneficiaries has grown to support over 500 individuals per event.

Beyond addressing food insecurity, the foundation organise recreational activities for children, aiming to bring moments of joy and normalcy to their often challenging lives.

Volunteers organise simple, fun games like sack races, relay games, and quizzes to bring joy. These small activities reward participants with a trophy for their smiles and efforts, fostering happiness and engagement.

The World Bank has highlighted the widening gap between urban and rural growth, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to support marginalised communities. As urban poverty remains a pressing issue across India, such initiatives highlight the importance of localised, community-driven solutions in tackling one of the country’s most persistent challenges.
