The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomy to several universities, empowering them with the freedom and flexibility to make academic and administrative choices. Nevertheless, the extent of autonomy may differ among these institutions.
The universities include the Central University of Punjab, the University of Delhi, the Central University of Rajasthan, the University of Hyderabad, and Maulana Azad National Hindu University among several others.
UGC Releases List of Autonomous Universities
The UGC has unveiled a roster of universities that have been granted graded autonomy under the University Grants Commission (Categorization of Universities (only) for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018. According to UGC Chairperson M. Jagadesh, these universities are designated either as Category I or II based on their NAAC grading.
DU Teachers Criticise UGC’s Move to Granting Autonomy
In the meantime, certain educators at Delhi University are criticizing the decision to grant autonomy, alleging that it is aimed at withholding funds for future expansion and shifting the responsibility of maintenance and growth onto students and parents.
