Delhi University has earmarked a fund of Rs 67.71 crore to establish a WiFi network across all its college campuses, including an upcoming girls’ hostel in Mukherjee Nagar, northwest Delhi. The Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) connectivity will cover approximately 90 colleges in both the north and south campuses, as well as the Dhaka Hostel complex, according to an official statement.

The implementation of this initiative will be financed through a loan of Rs 938.33 crore that the university secured from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) in October of the preceding year. Within this loan corpus, HEFA has allocated Rs 261.33 crore to support the WiFi network setup and initiate the construction of a building for the Faculty of Technology, the statement mentioned.

HEFA, a collaborative venture between Canara Bank and the Ministry of Education, extends financial assistance for educational infrastructure and research facilities in India’s premier educational institutions. Delhi University sought a HEFA loan in 2022 to address its infrastructural requirements and expansion plans, including the establishment of DU’s east Delhi campus in Surajmal Vihar and the launch of a new college in Najafgarh, as per the statement.

Besides the WiFi project, HEFA has sanctioned funding for five additional projects proposed by the university, with work set to commence upon the disbursement of funds, it added.
