A woman in her late twenties, who had recently married, was found dead in her Sector-11 residence in Noida.
Police identified the woman as Krishna Kotwal, an engineer. Her husband Lalit Mohan, also an engineer, claimed she committed suicide. But Krishna’s family alleged she was killed for dowry. No arrests have been made so far, police said.
Krishna worked in Gurgaon, while Mohan works in Sector-62, Noida. The two had married in March this year, police said.
Police said when they arrived at the scene, the body was lying in the courtyard of the house.
Senior superintendent of police Preetinder Singh said Mohan claimed his wife hung herself from a ceiling fan.
“On being questioned by police, her in-laws claimed she committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan and that when they discovered the body, they brought it down,” he said.
Police said they received a call from Mohan at 9 am, saying his wife had committed suicide. After arriving at the scene, police sent the body for postmortem.
But when the woman’s father arrived at the spot at 1 pm, he demanded that the body be brought back, police said.
The woman’s father, Lajja Ram, is a sub-inspector with the Intelligence Bureau. He alleged she was under pressure from her in-laws over dowry demands.
The deceased’s in-laws, Anil Mohan and Seema, live in Delhi, working in a city college as administrative staff.
“The postmortem report will establish the exact cause of death,” a senior police officer said.
