Bone-chilling cold conditions have persisted across North India for over a month, with regions like Jammu Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh experiencing heavy snowfall and rainfall. Although Saturday, brought a sunny respite to Delhi, the weather has taken another turn today with showers in Delhi and Noida. According to the latest forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures are anticipated to drop once more, accompanied by chilly winds and dense fog. Delhi Weather Update

Delhi and its neighboring National Capital Region (NCR) on Sunday morning experienced light rainfall, with the minimum temperature reaching 10 degrees Celsius. The IMD has predicted a mostly cloudy sky with light rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds on Sunday. The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 19 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 10 degrees Celsius. 

In the morning hours of Saturday, Delhi experienced a low of 6.7 degrees Celsius, which is two notches below the usual temperature for this time of the year. Dense fog was reported in certain isolated areas, adding to the wintry conditions. During Saturday morning, the national capital was shrouded in a thick layer of fog; however, the weather remained clear and sunny throughout the day.

Orange alert in Himachal for snowfall

The IMD has issued an orange alert for snowfall in Himachal Pradesh on February 4 and 5. The weather department forecasts light to moderate snowfall in most areas and heavy snowfall in isolated regions of the mid and high hills. Additionally, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms are expected in lower elevations, with wet conditions likely to persist in the state until February 6.

In addition to the national capital, the IMD has forecasted thunderstorms and lightning in certain areas across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Fresh Western Disturbance 

A fresh Western Disturbance is observed as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies, extending roughly along Long. 60°E to the north Lat. 32°N, with an induced cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan in lower tropospheric levels. This weather system is expected to bring the following conditions:

  • Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to experience light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and snowfall, along with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hailstorms at isolated places on February 4. This precipitation is anticipated to decrease to isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall on February 5, followed by dry weather thereafter.
  • Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh are forecasted to encounter light to moderate, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hailstorms at isolated places on February 4. Similar weather conditions are expected over Uttar Pradesh on February 4-5.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall and snowfall are predicted over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on February 4.
  • Strong surface winds, with speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, are highly likely over Northwest India today.
  • Arunachal Pradesh is expected to witness light to moderate, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and snowfall till February 6. Meanwhile, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura may experience isolated to scattered rainfall during the same period.
  • Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall, snowfall, and hailstorms are predicted over SubHimalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on February 5.
