At least four people died and six have been injured in an explosion that occurred at an illegal soap manufacturing unit that functioned out of a rented house in Meerut’s Lohia Nagar district on Tuesday morning.

The injured people were sent to a hospital. However, the exact cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, as reported by ANI.

According to District Magistrate Deepak Meena, “Five people were injured and they have been sent to a medical college. Soap wrapping and packaging used to take place here, but the exact reason for the explosion is not known as of now.”

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan said as quoted by Indian Express that though they were first informed that explosives meant to make firecrackers had exploded at the spot, preliminary inquiry indicated that the blast did not involve such explosives.

“Our primary focus is on rescuing those trapped. Later, an inquiry will determine the exact reason for the blast and also fix the responsibility,” said the SSP.

The police and rescue teams rushed to the spot to pull out those trapped under the debris.
