The Telangana government started the third phase of double-bedroom houses distribution from Monday, October 2 with the aim of providing 2BHK flats to around 19 thousand families. The scheme ‘Dignity Housing Scheme’ was initiated in 2015 and is expected to provide housing to 5.72 lakh unfortunate families living in Telangana.

Under the scheme various legislative ministers distributed their bits in different districts like Md. Mahmood Ali, Sabitha Indra Reddy, and Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi along with Deputy Speaker Padma Rao Goud have contributed at nine different locations. Minister Harish Rao has distributed the highest number of 2BHK flats, 6067, in Kollur-II.

The government has set some eligibility criteria for anyone to acquire the flat, which includes, firstly, the beneficiary must have a Below Poverty Line (BPL) card and a ration card to ensure the scheme benefits the targeted section of the society. Second, the house will only be allotted to housewives to empower women. Third, the scheme targets homeless people.

The 2BHK Housing Scheme has specified reservation for urban and rural areas. In rural areas, for SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes) beneficiaries, there is a 50% reservation, 7% for minority populations and 43% for everyone else. On the other hand, 65% of the reservations are given to others in metropolitan areas, 17% to SC, 6% to ST, and 12% to minority communities. Through these reservations, marginalized groups in society are guaranteed equal access to housing.
