South superstar Vijay officially announced his entry into politics on Friday by launching a political party, ‘Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam’. In a social media post on X, he said that his party intends to contest the 2026 Assembly polls in the state and that it would neither support any other party or participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections this year.
‘Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam’ loosely translates to ‘Tamil Nadu Victory Party’. The announcement has sparked celebrations among his fans, fueling speculations that had been rife for some time about the actor entering politics in a state known for stars transitioning from cinema to politics, following in the footsteps of late veterans M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.

In a social media post on X, Vijay stated that for him, politics was not merely a vocation but a “holy public service”. He further stated that his party aims to provide selfless, truthful politics with foresight, non-corrupt governance, without caste or religious differences, and adhering to the Indian Constitution, citing the current scenario of wrongful administration, corrupt politics, and divisive tactics.
“All are carving for good politics especially Tamil Nadu each people are carving for Selfless, truthful Politics with foresight and non corrupt government without caste – religion differences and with good administration. Very importantly, that Politics would be based on our Indian Constitution to suit Tamil Nadu State rights and will be based on this soil ‘By Birth all are same’ ideology,” the statement read.

As per the statement, “Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam” has decided not to participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The revelation of the party’s symbol, flag, articulation of ideologies, policies, and interactions with the public will be addressed after the general elections.
Widely recognised as Thalapathy (Commander), Vijay aged 48 years, has carved a prominent niche in the South Indian film industry. His notable contributions include blockbuster movies such as ‘Theri,’ ‘Master,’ ‘Bigil,’ ‘Beast,’ ‘Puli,’ ‘Thuppakki,’ ‘Mersal,’ and ‘Kaththi,’ among others.

Despite being acknowledged as second only to Rajinikanth in terms of mass appeal, Vijay has maintained a reserved and shy persona, contrasting with his on-screen action-hero image. His decision to step into politics signifies a notable departure from his characteristic reticence, indicating a new phase in his career.
Vijay now joins the ranks of other actor-turned-politicians in Tamil Nadu, including M G Ramachandran (MGR), Sivaji Ganesan, Jayalalithaa, the late Captain Vijayakanth, and Kamal Haasan.
