In an incident that has sparked outrage among parents and social media users, a teacher has been captured on CCTV cameras ruthlessly slapping a kindergarten student at least 35 times in a span of around two minutes. The incident took place at the Sadhna Niketan School in Gujarat’s Surat.
A video of the incident shows the girl writhing in pain as the teacher continues to slap her repeatedly on her back and face as other students in the class watched. The teacher, identified as 48-year-old Jashoda Khokhariya, was suspended. She had been a teacher with the school for the past 15 years.
The incident has since led to large-scale protests by parents who stormed the school and demanded that the teacher be handed over to them. The incident occurred on October 9 but only came to light on Wednesday.
The Kapodra police sprang into action following the protest by parents and the teacher was arrested promptly.
According to the Times Of India, the child was the daughter of a diamond artisan. Khokariya was based on the basis of a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, police said, adding that she has been charged under Sections 75 and 82 (corporal punishment) of the Juvenile Justice Act.
Kokhariya was eventually sacked by the school trustees following the intervention of the District Education Officer.
