Terming the Supreme Court verdict on Triple Talaq historical, Canadian writer Tarek Fatah said he was awake all night due to happiness and excitement about the upcoming decision on the issue. A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar on Tuesday set aside the practice of Triple Talaq or Islamic instant divorce, by a majority of 3:2. Soon after the order was made public, Tarek Fatah took to Twitter and posted, “BREAKING: Indian Supreme Court bans Islamic Instant Divorce ‘Triple Talaq’ for 6 months. Asks Govt to introduce legislation on matter.”
In a series of tweets, the author further shared his views about the 3:2 verdict on Triple Talaq. He posted: “The 5-member Indian Supreme Court ruled by a 3-2 majority that #TripleTalaq (Islamic Instant Divorce) is unconstitutional and set aside.” He further shared how excited he was due to the decision of apex court on this matter. In his next tweet, Fatah said, “I’ve been up all night, too happy & excited to sleep. The victory of #India’s Muslim women over the Mullahs is historical! #TripleTalakGone.”
The apex court of India, post giving its landmark verdict on the legality of the Islamic personal law practice of Triple Talaq, further directed the Union Government to formulate a new legislation within six months, with the involvement of all political parties, keeping politics aside.

Meanwhile, Muslim women rejoiced at the judgement saying they have emerged “victorious” and now feel protected. However, some of them opined that the victory in its true sense would be achieved once a law comes into force, making the practice punishable.
Triple Talaq is practiced by some in the Muslim community to instantly divorce their wives by saying Talaq three times.
