Navjot Singh Sidhu has been one of the most inspirational figures in Indian cricket. An audacious attitude combined with resolute approach and wit that can make any opponent surrender, the former Indian opener has ruled the hearts of Indians in different roles ranging from a hard-hitting batsman and a shrewd commentator to an elegant reality TV star and a dynamic politician. Over the years, he has been setting a perfect example for the youngsters with his grit and determination. Making his Test debut against West Indies in 1983, Sidhu scored just 19 runs in his first match followed by a string of poor performances. At that point, all he had in his armoury was a dead bat which forced the noted cricket columnist, Rajan Bala from The Indian Express to write an article on him titled ‘Sidhu: The Strokeless Wonder.’

He was dropped from the national side, sent back to the domestic cricket and was almost forgotten by the fans. However, comes the 1987 Cricket World Cup and Sidhu found his name in the Indian team. Batting in the top order, the Punjab batsman tore apart the oppositions scoring four consecutive half-centuries. The same columnist wrote an article titled ‘Sidhu: From Strokeless Wonder To A Palm-Grove Hitter’. Soon, he was being hailed as ‘Sixer Sidhu’ and life had changed for good.

Navjot Singh Sidhu after taking charge as Minister:

Since then, Sidhu never looked back setting examples one after the other. May it be the political gullies or the television studios, Sidhu’s innocence and aggression were clearly visible. He always took a stand and never held his words back getting respect from the entire country until the recent saga over the Kapil Sharma Show happened. The recently concluded assembly elections were as ugly as it could have been for Sidhu. Once a BJP member, he switched to Congress and called it a ‘ghar wapsi’, a statement which was largely criticised.

His cupidity for becoming the Chief Minister of the state clearly reflected in the move and even though many rumours emerged, he had to settle for a less important place in the party. Even after winning the election, reports of Sidhu wanting to be the deputy CM emerged but once again he had to settle with the Ministry of Local Government, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, Archives and Museums. Throughout his campaign, in fact, his political career, Sidhu had talked about doing good for the people but when this opportunity arrived, he was more busy complaining and fighting to continue on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’.

Watch Amarinder Singh’s warning for Sidhu:

He was so desperate to continue with the show that he gave an example of Kirron Kher who is a reality show judge herself despite being an MP, talked about his honesty and his wife even took to Facebook to say that they hardly make money to serve tea and biscuits to their guests. Yes, as an individual he has every right to do what he wants and nobody can question it because after all, he has bills to pay but as the Advocate General himself said, legally he cannot be stopped but ethically he needs to take a call.

And, it does make a lot of sense. First of all, he is not setting a right example for other party leaders by making a joke of this position and secondly, not letting the show go shows his personal preference. May be Sidhu himself knows that his television fame has more to do with his popularity than his political exploits and giving that up can lead to his downfall. Unfortunately, Navjot Singh has gone from ‘Sixer Sidhu’ to ‘Strokeless wonder’ once again and we can only hope that he realises the mistake and gets back on track like he has done so many times in the past.
