A 38-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy were killed when a portion of the slab and parapet of a five-story under-construction building collapsed in Mumbai, civic officials said Monday.
The incident took place at Kailas Business Park in the Vikhroli area at 11:10 pm on Sunday, a civic official said.
This comes as heavy rains hit parts of Mumbai on Sunday night. According to an official, when the fire brigade arrived after getting a call, they found that parts of the parapet and slab had fallen, and other parts of the under-construction building were hanging dangerously, the official said.
“Fireman removed the structures hanging precariously,” he said, as PTI reported.
Before the fire brigade arrived, locals took the man and the boy to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared them dead, the official said. This incident follows a similar tragedy on June 5, when one person died, and another was injured after a large portion of the slab of a single-storey structure collapsed in the Mahim area.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the start of the southwest monsoon over Mumbai on Sunday, two days earlier than usual. Many parts of the city, including Vikhroli, experienced water-logging after heavy rains on Sunday.
