Ahead of the counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, repolling is taking place at one booth each in the Barasat and Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal on Monday.
The decision for repolling, which was announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday, was based on reports of the returning officers, the district election officers and observers concerned, PTI reported.
According to ECI, the repolling started at 7 am and will be concluded by 6 pm. The first polling in Barasat and Mathurapur took place on June 1 in the seventh phase.
In the Barasat constituency, repolling is being conducted at a booth located at the Kadambagachi Saradar Para FP School in the Deganga assembly segment, while the one in Mathurapur is located at the Aaddir Mahal Srichaitanya Bidyapith in the Kakdwip assembly seat.
Clashes erupted between supporters of Trinamool Congress (TMC), Indian Secular Front (ISF), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in various areas of the state during the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1, as reported by ANI.
An alleged confrontation occurred between TMC and BJP workers at Bayarbari in Basirhat during the final phase of polling on Saturday. Another clash between TMC and BJP workers took place at Meraganj in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, resulting in several injuries.
Additionally, BJP had demanded repoll at several booths in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district where elections took place on June 1, alleging malpractices during the voting procedure.
