The CBI has reportedly begun a search operation at the residence of former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, on Sunday in relation to alleged financial irregularities at the institution during his time, officials said. According to them, the accused and their colleagues’ residences are among the 14 other locations in the city that the central probe agency is currently searching.
Following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a seminar hall on August 9, where volunteer traffic police officer Sanjay Roy was detained, the medical college came into media glare. Doctors and civilians across the country protested the gruesome crime.
The CBI has registered cases into the murder as well as alleged financial irregularities on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.
Additionally, the prohibition orders around the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been extended by Kolkata Police for an additional week, until August 31. First enforced on August 18, the orders prohibit meetings and get-togethers in the designated area with more than five participants.
Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday issued a statement saying that Section 163 (2) of BNSS has been imposed from Belgachia Road-J K Mitra Crossing to some parts of Shyambazar five-point crossing in north Kolkata.
The extension aims to keep the region peaceful and orderly by averting disturbances. The decision was made in response to the growing agitation over the hospital’s recent rape and murder of a female doctor. According to the order, anyone who disobeys these restrictions may face consequences under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
