On the occasion of the 70th Independence Day of India, Google’s doodle is paying homage to the famous ‘Tryst With Destiny’ speech by India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. ‘Remembering Tryst With Destiny’ on India’s Independence Day – reads Google doodle showing a scene of late PM Nehru’s speech to the Parliament on the eve of India’s Independence Day. The speech is famous not only for the fact that it was the first by the PM of independent India, but also for the strong message that Pandit Nehru delivered through it.
The opening lines of the speech were (as many would recall): Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now that time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. “At the stroke of today’s midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance,” late PM Nehru had said in a speech that lives with us till date.

Google has in the past few years honoured India’s Independence Day with creative doodles. Last year the doodle showcased the famous Dandi March being led by Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi started the Dandi March on March 12, 1930 to protest against the tax resistance and the British salt monopoly in colonial India. The Dandi march marked an important step in the freedom struggle. Earlier, Google’s doodles have paid tribute to independent India’s first stamp, peacock and the Red Fort itself on Independence Day.
