A thick blanket of snow has engulfed Lahaul and Spiti, plunging temperatures and causing major disruptions in daily life. The ongoing cold wave has gripped the region, marking a challenging winter for residents. A local while speaking to ANI, stated, ‘’Evenings are extremely cold and though mornings are sunlit, but still chill persists. Live here demands to wearing multiple layers to fight with freezing temperatures.’’ Another resident highlighted the continuous snowfall, stating, ‘’Simple chores like washing clothes have become so difficult. It’s tough to manage in such harsh weather.’’

Weather Forecast for Himachal Pradesh

A yellow alert for light showers and thunderstorms has been issued by the Meteorological Department in Shimla from January 4 to January 6 across Himachal Pradesh.

Weather conditions are expected to get more adverse in districts like Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti and Chamba. Tabo became one of the coldest places in the region by measuring bone numbing -16.7 degrees Celsius while areas like Kalpa measured to have a chilling -3 degrees Celsius. These two places witnessed temperatures dipping to extreme lows.

Coldwave impact across Northern India

The impact of the coldwave is not just restricted to Himachal Pradesh. Northwest, Central, east and northeast India is experiencing dense fog and low visibility. Even coastal regions like Andhra Pradesh are witnessing patches of fog. The national capital of India recorded zero visibility at its airports on Thursday. Similar weather conditions were prevalent in Agra, Pathankot, Gwalior and Amritsar. The widespread fog also indicates that India continues to be under grip of extreme weather conditions as 2025 begins.
