The Congress on Sunday condemned the militant group Hamas-led attacks on Israel, saying violence of any type never provides any solution and it must stop.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a post on X, wrote, “The Indian National Congress condemns the brutal attacks on the people of Israel. The Indian National Congress has always believed that the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a life of self-respect, equality and dignity must be fulfilled only through a process of dialogue and negotiations while ensuring the legitimate national security interests of the Israeli people.”
Violence of any type never provides a solution and must stop, he added.
On October 7, the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip launched a surprise, multi-front attack, resulting in the death of at least 40 Israelis. In response, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared a “war” and vowed that Israel would exact an “unprecedented price” from its adversaries.
On Sunday, several Israeli media outlets reported that the death toll from Hamas’ wide-ranging incursion into Israel has risen to 600. The Kan public broadcaster and Channel 12, as well as the Haaretz and Times of Israel newspapers, reported the toll today, reports AP.
There has been no official confirmation of the number of deaths on the Israeli side since the fighting erupted early Saturday. Palestinian officials say more than 300 people have been killed in Gaza, without differentiating between fighters and civilians.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the country stands with Israel.
“Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour,” he wrote on X on October 7.
