Under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas NYAY Yojana by the Chhattisgarh government, the state has announced to provide cemented permanent houses for around 47,000 poor people residing in rural areas of Chhattisgarh. The scheme was launched in 2021 but could not be immediately implemented due to the surge of the COVID pandemic.
The state-level program was inspired by the central government scheme, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, launched in 2016. As per the central government in November 2021, the Chhattisgarh government refused to take part in this national-level program and did not provide its share in the scheme.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was aimed at providing permanent housing to 18,75,580 families, with the shared expenditure of the center and state being 60:40.
The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel, informed us earlier this year that the state government will be conducting a socio-economic survey to get an exact number of beneficiaries. Due to the absence of a decennial census after the 2011 census, the state conducted its own survey in April, and the result showed around 11 lakh families were living in kutcha houses.
CM Baghel announced “Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas NYAY Yojana in July, which will provide assistance for the construction of houses to eligible beneficiaries of the housing scheme in the state and will bear 100 percent of the amount required for its implementation. The remaining families on the permanent waiting list of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin will benefit from the CM initiative”.
Since the election days are coming close in Chhattisgarh, the government finally decided to implement the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas NYAY Yojana in full force. As per the socio-economic survey results, out of 11 lakh families, the government has qualified 47,090 homeless families for the first phase of MGAY. Moreover, the government will be providing Rs 1.30 lakh to rural households and Rs 1.20 lakh to families living in plain areas.
