A British F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at the Kerala International Airport on Saturday night after running low on fuel, sources said here. The jet, which is believed to have taken off from an aircraft carrier, landed safely at around 9.30 pm, they said on Sunday.

Airport authorities declared an emergency to ensure a smooth and safe landing, said a source. “The pilot reported low fuel and asked for permission to land. Everything was handled quickly and professionally,” the source said. The aircraft is currently parked at the airport. Refueling will take place once approval is received from the relevant authorities in the Central government, reported PTI.

The Kerala airport was under a brief emergency declared by authorities as a means to ensure safety and smooth landing. Indian Air Force Officials streamlined the effort and said that they are “fully aware” of the “normal occurrence of diversion by F-35”.

The jet is currently deployed in the Indo-Pacific and has had previous ties with the Indian Navy during in the course of joint drills. The F-35 is considered as the one of the advances fighter jets in the aerial military fleet.
