With each passing day, the battle of Bihar is getting interesting as seat-sharing huddles hint at massive discomforts in both ruling NDA and opposition’s INDIA bloc. However, the NDA finalises the deal in time and the allies even began putting out lists of candidates. The BJP has so far released two lists of a total of 86 candidates fielding its strong contenders in the ground. And in its second list, the BJP named a famous folk singer – Maithili Thakur.
Maithili Thakur joined the saffron party in Patna on Tuesday in the presence of state BJP chief Dilip Jaiswal and other leaders. Though she did not say anything on fighting polls, she added that she would follow what the party would tell her to – hinting at the possibility of fighting Bihar election.
Come Wednesday, she is on the list and will contest the polls from Bihar’s Alinagar seat.
Who is Maithili Thakur?
Known for her melodious rendition of Bhajans, devotional and traditional songs, Maithili Thakur is a young singer who is praised for efforts to spread the traditional Maithili songs, folk music to the masses. The singer hails from Bihar’s Benipatti in Madhubani district. She comes from a family of musicians. Her father, Ramesh Thakur, is a music teacher, and Maithili and her two brothers have learned the art under the guidance of their father and grandfather.
It was in 2017 when Maithili became a national star after she participated in the singing reality show ‘Rising Star India’. Her command over traditional and difficult melodies, along with expertise of instruments made her a household name. Though she did not win the show, Maithili went on to grab a number of invitations for performance.
She then began her YouTube channel YouTubeshowcasing her talent with a continued focus on traditional and folk songs only. Her melodies include ‘Chhath geet’, ‘thumri’, and ‘sohar’ among others.
Maithili Thakur has been awarded for her contribution to the music industry with the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2021.
When PM Modi praised Maithili
Maithili, while joining the BJP, said she follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi and believes no one can match the aura the PM has. A similar sentiment was expressed by the Prime Minister as well when in January 2024, he praised Maithili Thakur for her touching rendition of a song on Maa Shabri during the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
“The occasion of Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya is reminding my family members across the country of every incident related to the life and ideals of Lord Shri Ram. One such emotional incident is related to Shabari. Listen, to how Maithili Thakur ji has put it in her melodious tunes,” the Prime Minister had said on X.
As for the election, Bihar will go to polls in two phases on November 6 and 11. The Election commission of India will count the votes polled on Nov 14.
