Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Main bhi Chowkidaar’ campaign and added the ‘chowkidar’ prefix to his name on social networking sites, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati today took a dig at the former saying the PM has become a chowkidar (watchman) and is no longer a chaiwala (tea seller).
“After BJP launch ‘Mai Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign, PM Modi & others added the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ to their Twitter handles. So now Narendra Modi is Chowkidar & no more a ‘Chaiwala’ which he was at the time of last LS election. What a change India is witnessing under BJP rule. Bravo!,” the BSP supremo tweeted today.
During the 2014 general election, Modi had marketed himself extensively as a chaiwala to buttress his humble background. At the time, BJP has also started a campaign ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ to connect with voters.
The BSP and SP combine will be in a direct contest with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh where the saffron party has held considerable sway in the past two elections. The Lok Sabha elections of 2014 saw the BJP decimate BSP and SP, winning 73 seats against five for the SP and none for Mayawati. This time though, a carefully engineered alliance between the rivals BSP and SP is the BJP’s biggest challenge this Lok Sabha election.
On Monday, Mayawati had asked the Congress not to create any confusion for the people by announcing seven seats for BSP-SP-RLD alliance in Uttar Pradesh. The state has 80 Lok Sabha seats in 2014, BJP won 71 of them. As per the seat sharing agreement, BSP will contest in 38, SP 37 and LJP 3 seats. The alliance had offered two seats for the Congress, following which the saffron party decided to contest separately.

On Sunday, Congress had also offered seven seats for the alliance. “The Congress is leaving seven Lok Sabha seats in the state for the SP, BSP and RLD alliance. These include Mainpuri, Kannauj and Firozabad. Apart from this, the party will not field any candidate on seats from where BSP chief Mayawati, RLD chief Ajit Singh and his son Jayant Chaudhary are likely to contest or may contest,” Congress leader Raj Babbar was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
