The results of the Manipur Assembly Elections 2017, which ended on March 8, will be announced today. Activist Irom Sharmila, who is fighting the polls for the first time today alleged the use of money and muscle power by politicians to influence polls in the state. The elections this year became interesting with a high-pitched campaign by Bharatiya Janata Party, entry of anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Sharmila, and visits of high-profile leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi in the state. A strong Bharatiya Janata Party is posing a serious threat to the 15-year rule of Congress in the state under the leadership of Okram Ibobi Singh. However, there is no clarity even as the political pundits expect a huge downfall for Congress. Last time when Manipur went to polls in 2012, the Congress won a whopping 42 seats out of the 60 in the 10th Assembly. This was an addition of 12 seats compared to the 2007 elections when the Congress won 30 seats.
Underdevelopment, AFPSA repeal , unemployment, frequent economic blockades, are the key issues in the Manipur elections. Last time, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who has held the reins in Manipur since 2002, won his Thoubal seat defeating rival Oinam Indira Devi of BJP with a margin of 15,000 voters. However, this time the CM is facing a tough contest from Irom Chanu Sharmila, the anti-AFSPA crusader who has joined politics ending her 16- year hunger strike. The state has a 19,02,562-strong electorate comprising of 9,28,573 male and 9,73,989 female voters. There are around 45,642 new voters this time.

How the results can change in 2017
Opinions are divided over the result of Manipur Assembly Elections 2017. However, a downfall in number of seat for Congress(currently 42) is highly speculated. The elections has seen a high voter turnout of 86 per cent.
EXIT POLLS 2017: MANIPUR (Total seats 60)
The state is being ruled by Congress chief minister Okram Ibobi. According to the India Today exit poll BJP will win 16-22 seats, Congress will win 30-36 seats and others will get 6-11. As per India TV exit poll, BJP will get, 25-31, Congress will get, 17-23 and others will get 9-15 seats.
The 60 seat elections were divided into two phases. In the first phase, the issue of economic blockade by the United Naga Council and the state government’s inability to lift it dominated the electioneering. The other important issues in the minds of voters are the alleged lack of development, massive corruption, misappropriation of funds and worsening law and order situation in the state.
