Andhra Pradesh Assembly composition

The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the lower house of the state legislature, consists of a total of 175 seats. Out of these, 29 seats are specifically reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 7 seats are reserved for those from the Scheduled Tribes (STs). In the recent election, a substantial number of candidates contested for these seats, with a total of 2,387 individuals vying for the 175 available positions. 

Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections 2024: Past election results

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the incumbent Chief Minister, led his party, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), to a decisive victory in the 2019 assembly elections, winning 151 out of 175 seats. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won no seats, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured 23 seats, and the Jana Sena Party (JSP), led by Tollywood actor Pawan Kalyan, won just one seat.

Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections 2024: Voter participation 

This year, voter registration in Andhra Pradesh reached nearly 40 million, including around 20 million male voters, 20.1 million female voters, 3,421 third-gender voters, and 68,185 service electors. According to the Election Commission’s Voter Turnout app, 69.49% of the electorate participated in the Lok Sabha elections, while 69.61% voted in the Assembly elections on May 13.

Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections 2024: Key contests and political dynamics

The ruling YSRCP, led by Reddy, is defending its stronghold against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The NDA coalition includes the BJP, former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, and Pawan Kalyan’s JSP. Additionally, the Congress-led INDIA bloc, headed by Jagan Reddy’s younger sister YS Sharmila, is vying for influence.

Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections 2024: Historical context and current outlook

In the 2019 elections, the YSRCP captured 151 seats with a 49.95% vote share. The TDP secured 23 seats with 39.17% of the vote, and the JSP won one seat. The BJP and Congress did not win any seats in the 2019 Assembly elections.
