Every year, during the Hindi month of Sawan (July/August), the Kanwar Yatra—a significant pilgrimage for devotees of Lord Shiva known as kanwariyas—commences. These devotees embark on a journey to fetch holy water from the Ganges River. This year, as the tradition continues, significant disruptions are anticipated on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) in Ghaziabad.

Kanwar Yatra 2024: Expressway closure and traffic management

Starting from the night of July 28, all six lanes of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway will be closed to traffic from UP Gate at the Delhi border to Kashi toll plaza near the Meerut border. This closure is expected to last for at least five days. Despite this, adjacent lanes of NH-9 will remain operational during this period.

Kanwar Yatra 2024: Routes for pilgrims

In Ghaziabad, three main routes are traditionally used by pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi heading towards Haridwar for the yatra:

1. Pipeline Road: Pilgrims walking on foot typically take the Pipeline Road from Loni Border to Niwari.

2. Delhi-Meerut Expressway: The dak kanwariyas, who travel barefoot and are supported by relay runners in trucks or bikes, predominantly utilize this expressway.

3. NH-34 via GT Road: A considerable number of kanwariyas also opt for this route.

Kanwar Yatra 2024: Phased restrictions

To manage the influx of kanwariyas, traffic limitations will be implemented in phases:

-Phase 1 (July 22–July 24): Heavy vehicles like trucks and buses will be diverted to NH-9 and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Light vehicles can still use the expressway and NH-58.

-Phase 2 (July 25–July 28): Light vehicles will be allowed on NH-58, but only on the left side of the road if traveling from Delhi to Haridwar. This creates a dedicated lane for the kanwariyas.

-Phase 3 (July 29–August 4): This phase enforces a complete ban on all types of vehicles on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and NH-58 between Haridwar and Meerut.

If you’re planning to travel on these routes, monitor traffic advisories from local police closer to your travel date, as restrictions may vary by location. During the complete ban from July 29 to August 4, consider alternative routes like NH-334 or state highways. Be prepared for potential congestion on these routes as well.

To avoid road closures and traffic jams during the peak Kanwar Yatra period, opt for public transport options such as trains or buses. By planning ahead and staying informed about traffic restrictions, you can navigate the annual Kanwar Yatra period with minimal disruption.
