Kolkata metro commuters taking the Orange Line will be relieved as the Kolkata Metro Railway has launched a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based ticketing system effective from today (July 24). This new payment method will streamline ticket purchases across all stations from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay.
The introduction of the UPI payment system follows the successful implementation on the Green Line-1, Green Line-2, and Blue Line. Commuters using the Orange Line will now be able to make payments directly through their smartphones, eliminating the need for exact cash or coins.
Seamless Payment Experience
The new system, developed in collaboration with the State Bank of India and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), allows passengers to pay for tickets by scanning a QR code displayed on a dual display board at ticket counters. By using any UPI app, commuters can complete their transactions quickly and efficiently. Following payment, tokens will be issued, enabling travel along the Orange Line. Additionally, the system supports the purchase and recharge of Smart Cards.
Metro Railway authorities have reported a positive response from passengers, who appreciate the convenience and efficiency of the new payment option. The introduction of UPI payment is expected to enhance the overall commuting experience and reduce wait times at ticket counters.
This latest development is part of a broader initiative to modernize and simplify travel across Kolkata’s Metro network, making daily commutes more seamless for thousands of passengers.
