The Detailed Feasibility Reports (DFR) for the extension of Phase ll Chennai Metro project from Koyambedu to Avadi (via Thirumangalam, Mogappair) and Siruseri to Kilambakkam bus terminus (via Kelambakkam) has been submitted by the Chennei Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), The Indian Express reported.

The proposed Koyambedu to Avadi elevated metro line is an extension of corridor 5 of Phase ll. The CMRL has recommended for the metro rail services above the line to be extended for a total length of 16.07 kilomteres with around 15 stations at an estimated cost of Rs 6.736.18 crore.

The CMRL recommended the extension based on the recent developments such as IT parks, land availability, and future growth potential in Pattabiram. It noted that the extension from Avadi to Pattabiram can be explored during the Detailed Project Report stage.

Additionally, detailed feasibility study was conducted for the expansion of the Siruseri to Kilambakkam route, covering a total distance of 23.5 kilometers. This expansion is expected to include approximately 12 elevated stations and is estimated to cost approximately Rs. 5,458.06 crore.

The CMRL in a statement said that when the estimated ridership in the proposed location is considered, it is less for a metro system. “CMRL is recommending dedicated/improved city bus services in that stretch towards Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. Further study is recommended in the south extension towards Thiruporur, Mahabalipuram via Kelambakkam which has substantial industrial and residential developments post-completion of the Phase 2 project,” it added.
