Micromax, the largest domestic manufacturer of mobile handsets, on Thursday launched laptops in an attempt to create an Apple like ecosystem, the first by any Indian hardware company. Vikas Jain, its founder, said Micromax’s long-term vision is to have a similar ecosystem that will be driven by services.

“We will have one login id that will help in accessing multiple devices, and use services across screens. Across screens we want to give you a commonality of a base experience,” said Jain. “In future, a large part of our revenue will come from services. Devices will be an acquisition tool for us.”

Globally, Apple is the only hardware company able to create a platform that Micromax desires to build, said analysts. Every month, Micromax sells 3 million mobile devices in India, 70,000 televisions and 70,000 tablets. With the launch of laptops, which the company calls Laptabs because of its smaller screen size, Jain is looking at a full-blown Internet experience having a cloud-based strategy.

The Laptabs will be priced at Rs 14,999 and available only on Amazon for the next two months. Once the company starts making them in India, by the end of June, they will go for offline sale.

“We are looking at 20% of our sales online and rest from offline channels,” said Jain. The Laptabs will be made at Micromax’s Rudrapur plant. Two new assembly lines have been set up and the production volume will be doubled in the next eight months.
