India’s second largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel in April added 76,328 mobile users—its lowest monthly addition in five years—according to data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
Meanwhile, Reliance Jio added over three million wireless users in the month, largely due to subscriber loss by Vodafone Idea.

The reason for the lowest addition of users by Airtel can be attributed to SIM consolidation by subscribers at lower level, owing to an increase in base level tariff hikes by the company, according to analysts.
After increasing the base level tariffs in two circles by 57% to Rs 155 from Rs 99, the company extended the tariff hikes to all 22 circles in March.
However, Airtel has retained its top position in 10 circles, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh (East), Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Assam and Himachal Pradesh.
Data shows that the company is the only private telecom operator that has gained wireless subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir, Mumbai and Northeast in April.
The company added its highest April number— 90,000 users—in Assam, followed by Odisha, Rajasthan and West Bengal.
In comparison, Reliance Jio continued to top the subscriber additions for 13 straight months. In April, Jio added 3.04 million subscribers largely on the back of Vodafone Idea, which lost three million subscribers during the month. Vodafone Idea continued to lose subscribers for 25 straight months now. In April too, its subscriber loss was the highest in the past five months.
The total mobile user base was 1.143 billion at the end of April, down by 0.8 million from the preceding month. The fall in subscribers was largely attributed to the loss of Vodafone Idea and BSNL as well as weak subscriber addition by Airtel.
State-owned BSNL lost wireless subscribers for the 16th straight month. In April, the company lost 0.73 million wireless subscribers. BSNL’s total subscriber base as of April end was 102.8 million.

Vodafone Idea, however, lost 1.25 million 4G subscribers during the month while 4G subscriber additions for Airtel and Jio came on the back of the shift in the subscriber base from 2G as well as loss of subscribers by Vodafone Idea, according to analysts.
Since Jio’s network is completely on 4G from the start, its 4G subscriber addition is the same as that of total additions. Airtel added 2.33 million 4G subscribers, taking its total 4G subscribers to 238.1 million. Vodafone Idea’s 4G subscriber base was at 123.6 million as of April-end.The total 4G subscriber base rose to nearly 816 million.

The total number of active mobile users rose by nearly 4.2 million. Of the total 1.143 billion wireless subscribers, 1.038 billion or 90.84% were active, according to the peak visitor location register, which shows the number of active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile operator’s network.
