Progress (Nasdaq: PRGS), an infrastructure software provider, has announced the latest release of Progress® OpenEdge®, the flagship application development platform.
According to an official release, by leveraging OpenEdge 12.8, organisations can optimise their development processes, improve database performance, enhance application security, and stay current with the technology landscape. It’s believed that OpenEdge 12.8 enhances developer productivity by equipping Advanced Business Language (ABL) developers with tools and features to streamline their workflows, including OpenTelemetry, a observability framework, with instrumentation to provide operational metrics and trace information, and with build support for developers to change their codebase and rebuild only the affected parts.
From what it’s understood, OpenEdge 12.8 delivers advancements in application integration and environment management through monitoring and administration capabilities, made possible by integrating with Kafka which enables businesses to enhance their applications with event streaming and data integration for real-time data feeds. Reportedly, OpenEdge Command Center enables managing OpenEdge applications through centralised monitoring, administration, and diagnostics, integrating Application Performance Management (APM) tools. Seemingly, this release includes database improvements that enable administrative tasks to be performed online, eliminating the need for downtime for offline maintenance operations. Sources suggest that OpenEdge 12.8 introduces features to reinforce application security and help safeguard critical data such as Data Regulation Support with Dynamic Data Masking (DDM), Hardware Security Module (HSM) support, and Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 support.
“Whether you’re an ABL developer seeking productivity tools, a database administrator aiming to streamline management tasks or a security-conscious professional striving to protect critical assets, OpenEdge 12.8 seeks to enable one to develop, deploy and manage business applications that are more secure, scalable and agile,” John Ainsworth, executive vice-president, general manager, application and data platform, Progress, said.
