India is getting ready to commemorate its 75th Republic Day on January 26. The day holds special significance as the country’s Constitution came into effect. The main attraction of the Republic Day is its parade which takes place at Kartavya Path (earlier known as Rajpath) in the national capital of India, New Delhi. The Republic Day parade is a spectacular display of the cultural diversity and military power of India.

Here are ten interesting facts about India’s Republic Day Parade:

1) With the arrival of the President, the Republic Day parade begins. The President’s bodyguards, the cavaliers, start the R-Day event by saluting the National Flag, accompanied by the National Anthem of the country.

2) Parade this year will feature two all-women contingents from the defence forces (comprising 144 personnel).

3) “India – Mother of Democracy” and “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) — is the theme this year for R-Day.

4) As the chief guest, this year, French President Emmanuel Macron has been invited. It is a tradition to invite a leader from other country to Republic Day celebrations. In 2023, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was the chief guest.

5) For the Republic Day parade 2024, nearly 15 tableaux from different states and Union Territories are chosen.

6) On January 26, 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, unfurled the National Flag, officially announcing the birth of India as a democratic republic.

7) In 1950, at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, the first Republic Day procession took place. It featured over 100 aircraft and 3,000 Indian military personnel.

8) In 1955, Kartavya Path hosted its first Republic Day parade.

9) Near India Gate, a special camp exhibits not only tanks but also armoured vehicles and modern military gear showcasing India’s military strength.

10) There is a four-level investigation for parade participants. Their guns undergo thorough checks to ensure they are not loaded with live bullets.
