The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has achieved a significant feat by completing the construction of a 298-kilometer road connecting Nimmu, Padam, and Darcha in Ladakh. This accomplishment comes amidst the ongoing border tensions with China and marks the establishment of the third axis to the strategically important region, supplementing the existing routes from Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh.
This newly constructed road serves as a lifeline for Ladakh, providing vital connectivity to the region, especially during challenging times. It strengthens the defense preparedness along the northern borders and stimulates economic development in the Zanskar valley, thereby addressing both security and developmental needs.
Unlike the other routes, this road offers a shorter and more efficient passage, crossing only one pass, Shinkun La, located at an altitude of 16,558 feet. The commencement of tunnel work at Shinkun La further underscores the commitment to establishing all-weather connectivity to Ladakh.
Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, Director General of Border Roads, highlighted the determination and perseverance of the BRO personnel, who worked tirelessly even in adverse weather conditions to complete the connectivity project. Despite facing challenges, including frozen river crossings and rugged terrains, the BRO successfully accomplished its mission, demonstrating its expertise and dedication.
The completion of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road is particularly significant as it ensures year-round accessibility to Ladakh, reducing its dependency on aerial routes during winters when the Manali-Leh highway remains closed. This enhanced connectivity not only facilitates the movement of defense personnel and supplies but also promotes trade and tourism in the region, benefiting local communities.
