The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of April 2024 stood at 0.80%. The airline with the highest cancellation rate was Fly Big with 10%, followed by Indiaone Air and Alliance Air with 9.55% and 3.99% respectively, Traffic Data Report by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) revealed. 

The report further revealed that miscellaneous, technical, operational and weather are the major problems for such flight cancellations as the data showed that 42.3% of flights were cancelled due to miscellaneous reasons, followed by technical at 28.2%, weather at 16.2%, operational (12.6%), however, 0.7% flights were cancelled due to financial reasons.

What was the passenger trend?

Passengers carried by domestic airlines between January to April 2024 were 523.46 lakh against 503.93 lakh during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an annual growth of 3.88% and monthly growth of 2.42%.

In terms of passenger complaints, in April 2024, only 774 passenger-related complaints were received by the scheduled domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month of April 2024 was around 0.59. Flight problems, baggage, refunds and customer services were among the most common reasons for complaints. The data showed that 36.7% of complaints were registered for flight problems, followed by refunds with 18.1%, 17.8% for baggage and 10.1% for customer services, among others.

How did the airlines perform?

Indigo topped the list of market share in the month of April with 60.6%, followed by Air India with 14.2% and Vistara in third position with 9.2% market share. When compared to the previous month, March, there was no or negligible difference in the market share of these airlines.
