Tata Steel on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Jharkhand government for a second industrial training centre (ITC) at Tamar, 60 km near Ranchi.

The steel major had earlier on, as part of its 12 million tonne per annum (mtpa) greenfield steel project at Tontaposhi in the adjacent Seraikela-Kharswan district, inaugurated an industrial training centre with support of the local administration.

The MoU was signed at Ranchi?s Nepal House by state representative Kapil Deo Tiwary, director, department of labour, employment & training and Avinash Prasad, chief resident executive, Tata Steel, in the presence of development commissioner Sushil Kr Choudhary.

Tata Steel had promised in its greenfield steel plant MoU with the state in 2005 that it would set up industrial training centres in the state so that the youth could be made employable.

This centre, whose academic functions will henceforth be undertaken by Tata Steel, would thus help impart technical skills among the unskilled local youth of the area in order to make them competent enough for the company?s upcoming steel project. According to Choudhary, the training programme being initiated jointly by Tata Steel and the Jharkhand government aims at taking the state forward in terms of good human capital.

It would be the responsibility of the state government to provide the company with adequate building and laboratory infrastructure for the centre for a period of 30 years.

Tata Steel, on the other hand, will be responsible for providing necessary machines, equipment and manpower to run the centre.

The steel major would also, besides acquiring requisite affiliation, bear the running cost as well as be responsible for managing the centre. It has also been mutually agreed that the student intake ratio between the Jharkhand government and Tata Steel for the centre would be 25:75.
