The Punjab government on Tuesday cleared 41 mega industrial projects with an investment of over Rs 26,000 crore.

A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of the empowered committee chaired by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal here. As many as 30 industrial park projects have been issued letters of intent while the empowered committee decided to follow suit in the case of 11 others.

The companies to whom letters of intent are being issued are Delhi-based Ansal Properties and Infrastructure, Dynamic Global Prop Franchise, Futuristic Technology Infrastructure, Emaar MGF Land and Shipra Estate, Ludhiana-based Pragati Techno Ltd and Punjab Wool Combers Ltd, and Chandigarh-based ITFT Consultancy, Swaraj Infotech Park and MD@Infrastructure Consultants.

According to an official spokesman, the government is of the view that the objective of the industrial park projects is to increase the availability of industrial plots. The state government was not acquiring land now for developing industrial focal points and the industrial policy encouraged private developers to develop industrial parks by purchasing the land on their own, he added. The spokesman said the policy parameters of state government had been kept in line with the Centre?s policy of encouraging industrial parks in the private sector. Such parks could be developed in minimum 10 acres of contiguous land.

Under the present policy, industrial parks can also be set up on the existing industrial land allotted to industrial units after getting it converted into industrial park, provided the unit had remained in production for five years. As much a 60% of the area of an industrial park is to be used for industrial purposes and remaining for housing and commercial and commercial usage, but that must not exceed 10% of the total area, according to the spokespesman.
