Around 550 industrial units located in the Adityapur industrial area and traders in most parts of the city observed a one-day bandh on Monday to protest against the recent kidnapping of a local industrialist and the administration’s failure to trace the abducted person even after six days.
The bandh call was given by all the leading trade bodies including the Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Seraikela-Kharswan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Adityapur Small Industries Association, the Singhbhum Industries Association, and the All India Builders Association.
Talking to FE here on Monday, East Singhbhum police super Pankaj K Darad said though the FIR had been lodged in the adjacent Seraikela-Kharswan district, from where Viswanath Garg, owner of Galaxy Exports, was abducted on the evening of July 17, police teams of both the districts were conducting search operations together.
Garg and the driver of the vehicle in which he was returning home were allegedly abducted on national highway 33.
Police is clueless even after six days and the vehicle is yet to be traced. Four police teams have been sent to Bihar and West Bengal in search of the missing persons, he said.
Darad said family members of the industrialist have not so far received any phone call from abductors asking for ransom.
According to Suresh Sonthalia, general secretary of the Singhbhum Chamber, many banks and post offices in different parts of the city were closed.
