A day after an under-construction Metro rail bridge collapse killed six persons, the Centre on Monday said there would be no compromise on safety issues during Delhi Metro construction, and ?all precautions? would be taken to prevent accidents.
?We will never compromise on safety aspects. We will see to it that all precautions are taken to prevent recurrence of such events,? urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy told reporters outside Parliament. Meanwhile, E Sreedharan has been asked by the Delhi government to continue as the managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Sreedharan had submitted his resignation taking moral responsibility for the mishap . When asked if the state government will initiate any separate inquiry on Sunday?s accident, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said action will be taken after the probe panel submits its report. On Sreedharan?s resignation, Dikshit said, ?He has agreed to continue (as Metro managing director). We had requested him to continue.? The CM said the entire issue was discussed threadbare with the Cabinet colleagues and report is being awaited in the matter. The Delhi Metro had constituted a four-member panel to inquire into the reason behind the collapse of the half-constructed bridge on Sunday. The panel will submit its report within 10days.
?The Cabinet discussed the entire incident and now we are waiting for the report after which appropriate action will be taken,? the chief minister said.
On being asked if the government would set up a separate probe panel, she said, ?There is no need for a separate committee. DMRC is a responsible body. We don?t interfere in their work. The panel constitutes of well-known experts.? ?Let them submit the report then we will see,? she added. Meanwhile, six persons were injured in another mishap when cranes carrying out debris clearance operation at the accident site.
