In what will come as good news for thousands of Matiz car owners, the once popular hatchback from the now defunct Daewoo Motors, General Motors India is looking at extending service and spare support to them that would give them access to the company service and spare support.

The company is currently evaluating a proposal on whether to extend the service/spare network for Matiz owners in the country, though no final decision has been taken. ?We are evaluating whether to extend the support to them. However, nothing has been finalised as of now,? sources told FE.

Around 1 lakh Matiz cars are believed to be in the market currently which were left in the lurch after the company closed down operations in India following trouble at its South Korean parent. Most of the Matiz owners visit local workshops for maintenance and repair and depend on grey market for spare parts. However, things may change for them if GM India plans to bring them in their fold.

In case it decides to go ahead, the Matiz cars would mean an additional business opportunity for GM service centres in India.

The company would source spare parts from its Korean subsidiary GMDAT (GM Daewoo Auto & Technology) to meet the requirements in India.

When contacted, a company spokesperson, however, said there were ?no plans? to extend such a service support for Matiz owners in India.

Daewoo car owners in India were left with no option after the company closed operations in India and General Motors, that acquired key assets of the bankrupt South Korean company in 2002, left the Indian operations out of the deal. However, when the company introduced the Chevrolet Spark in India (Daewoo Matiz in its new avatar) this year, it was believed that the company may offer support to existing Matiz owners too.
