Badarpur Energy Pvt Ltd is set to commission Assam’s first biomass power project next month.
Planned to meet group company Barak Valley Cements Ltd’s captive requirement of energy, a scarce commodity in power-starved Assam, Badarpur Energy is on the verge of switching on a 6 MW multi-fuel thermal power plant at Devendra Nagar in Badarpurghat, close to Silchar, that would use rice husk, betel nutshell and even bamboo dust as fuel.
“We expect to start the plant within a month. The power generated by this plant will meet the entire energy requirement of the production facility of Barak Valley Cements and contribute towards conservation of fossil-fuels. This multi-fuel, environment-friendly power plant will be the first of its kind in the north-east and a trend-setter so to speak,” said Badarpur Energy director Kamakhya Chamaria.
With the corporate sector cashing in on their efforts to use green technology, Badarpur Energy is also in the process of bagging certification for certified emissions reduction.
“We have already applied to the United Nations Organisation for carbon credit certification,” Chamaria said.
The project is being set up at an approximate cost of Rs 22 crore. Power generated in the plant will be transmitted through a dedicated line to the adjuscent BVCL’s plant as well as subsidiary, Cement International Ltd’s plant.
The company is planning to increase the capacity of BVCL’s Silchar plant to 650 tonnes a day from 460 tonnes.
