A committee headed by Planning Commission member Anwarul Hoda is expected to submit its report on reforming ?inspector raj? to the Prime Minister?s Office (PMO) soon.
?The committee has almost formalised the report and is expected to submit the report to PMO soon,? a senior official of the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) said.
Speaking to FE here on Friday DIPP director SK Thade said, the committee is expected to recommend a number of measures to streamline the Acts, which come in the way of industrial growth. ?We expect the committee to submit its report to the PMO soon,? he said.
The PMO along with secretaries of ministries concerned will discuss the report and its recommendations, he added.
According to him, there are a number of Acts, which call for different requirements. The report is expected to suggest how to streamline the inspector raj without touching the Acts.
The report will also call for quality accreditation of the industry. By acquiring quality certificates, the industry gain the credibility thereby reducing the time taken in getting credits, he said. Industry sources here point out that the report will also suggest drastic cut on the frequent visits of inspectors into factory premises, ensuring visit of all inspectors on a given day, single time, to curb bribery and corruption, streamlining of stamp paper duties and value added tax (VAT) payment system. Thade was in Chennai to attend a two-day workshop on ?Doing Business in India? organised by the World Bank in association with CII, DIPP and IFC. The government has recently brought down the number of items reserved for SSIs from 600 to 114 and on Friday it has further slashed to 35.
