Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor starrer Tamasha box office collections started on a positive note on day 1 with the occupancy rate during morning shows at an approximate 40%. That figure translated into Tamasha collections of Rs 10.87 crore in domestic market and if we add the foreign take to it, the total rises to Rs 21.57 cr. On day 2, signalling that it packs a heavier punch than many gave it credit for, Tamasha collections jumped over its day 1 figure to rake in as much as Rs 13.17 crore and took its India total to a commendable Rs 24.04 crore and the cumulative foreign-take added balloons the amount to Rs 40.73 crore.
Day 3 was better than each of the previous days, with the collections figure rising to as much as Rs 14.12 crore. That was Sunday. Monday day 4 however, was an entirely different story with the collections virtually collapsing to Rs 5.07 crore! This signalled that the word of mouth booster shot by those who had seen the movie was not good enough to lure their friends and kin to the theatres. In domestic market, this has taken the Tamasha collections to Rs 43.30 crore. With the international amount added, the total rises to Rs 65.70 crore – the sum is nothing to sneeze at and that is why reports have filtered in that both Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor were celebrating their ‘success’.
Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor performances have come in for praise, according to first reports. Tamasha was a highly anticipated movie and the crowds headed to theatres in large numbers on day 1 (Friday).
However, low key advance bookings and mixed responses suggest that Tamasha despite posting decent opening day box office collections figures will witness a drop in the take as the weekend progresses – in short, it may not have the stamina to last the distance through the week.
But though Tamasha has been well talked about in the weeks prior to its release, will it actually live up to the magic created by the leading pair Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor in their previous release Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani?
And more pertinently, in this season of hits, will Tamasha be able to compete at all with Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) box office collections, which just turned into a Rs 200 crore movie in terms of domestic collections (on 14th day)? That is the big question.
Whether it does that or not, after a two week uninterrupted run at the box office, the Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo finally faces competition in the form of Tamasha.
Like PRDP collections, Tamasha collections too are set for a big boost as it too is enjoying a solo release – the competition is against PRDP, which is a fading star at the fag end of second week since release having collected under Rs 3 cr on day 14.
On the whole, with mixed reviews, Tamasha, much like most Imtiaz Ali films that usually cater to the multiplex going audience, will have to rely heavily on positive word of mouth and good reviews to post decent weekend collection figures.
