The Vatican officials’ informed that Pope Francis’s health has sharply declined in the last 24 hours has sent shockwaves across the global community, according to a Reuters report. For the first time, his condition has been described as “critical.”

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. His sudden deterioration has required immediate medical intervention, including blood transfusions and supplemental oxygen.

What is the Pope suffering from?

According to the latest report, Pope has experienced a severe respiratory crisis. Doctors have diagnosed that he is suffering from pneumonia and it has affected both the lungs. In medical terms, it is a complex condition that involves multiple micro-organisms. The involvement of the dual lung has swollen up his respiratory system. This condition has further compromised his already weakened state, as it is making it difficult for him to breathe. As Reuters reported, ‘’The Holy Father’s condition remains critical,’’ a statement highlights the seriousness of the situation.

The detection has not only underlined the risks involved with advanced age but has also stated past health complications, including previous lung issues that have left him more in danger of respiratory infections.

Medical experts stance on Pope’s health condition

Medical experts are closely monitoring the situation, asserting that the Pope’s fragility and prior health issues have escalated the risks. Health expert Dr. Andrea Vinci stated to Reuters, ‘’It seems it is under control, but his body is indicating signs of trouble to overcome the situation.’’ Along with struggling with respiratory issues, tests also detected a low platelet count.  It is because this condition is also linked to anaemia which has prompted blood transfusions to boost both red blood cells and platelets. The concern now has extended to the potential spread of the infection in his bloodstream which can result in sepsis, a lethal complication.

As the Pope has missed public appearances including Angelus prayers, the global community continues to be anxious.
