The United States is bolstering Israel’s air defense with the deployment of its advanced anti-missile system, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), following heightened tensions in the region. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the deployment on October 13, alongside US troops to operate the system, under the direction of President Joe Biden. This move comes after Iran issued warnings to the US to refrain from military involvement in Israel.
Israel is preparing to respond to missile attacks, including Iran’s most recent strike on October 1, when 180 missiles were launched into Israeli territory. Additionally, Israeli forces have intensified their operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, with escalated airstrikes and border activities.
What is THAAD?
THAAD is a US-developed missile defense system designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles at high altitudes, providing a critical layer of protection. It is capable of neutralizing short-, medium-, and limited intermediate-range missile threats. This system enhances Israel’s defense, especially in the context of its recent retirement of the Patriot defense system.
Each THAAD battery typically consists of six truck-mounted launchers, 48 interceptors, radar equipment, and requires about 95 soldiers to operate. The US Army currently operates seven THAAD batteries, primarily in regions facing high ballistic missile threats.
The deployment of the THAAD system signals the possibility of more direct US involvement in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, which intensified after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Iran has launched missile strikes in retaliation, and the US aims to strengthen Israel’s defenses in response to these growing threats.
Strategic Implications
The introduction of THAAD adds another layer to Israel’s air defense network, reinforcing its ability to counter missile threats in a volatile region. By deploying US troops to operate the system, the US may become more directly engaged in defending Israel against missile attacks from Iran and its allies.
