Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was a staunch Donald Trump ally, was fatally shot while he was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday, September 10 (US time). Although the investigation is still ongoing, the latest development on the issue has led the FBI to take a person in custody.
“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody,” FBI director Kash Patel wrote on X. No further concrete information is available at hand right now. Additionally, a senior FBI official has since shared with NBC News that they are confident that the person of interest, though not yet publicly named, in custody is the shooter.
UPDATE: Since the suspect hasn’t been identified yet, there appears to be a lot of confusion about the arrests made at the scene. In yet another X post, Patel foregrounded that a previously held “subject” was “released after an interrogation by law enforcement.”

A man named George Zinn was initially detained in connection with the shooting at the university. However, authorities initially since denied that he was the “person of interest” being referred to in the case.
As of now, two people have been taken into custody, but both were released. No charges have been filed against them. Due to the lack of clarity amid the ongoing probe, it remains unclear if others were subsequently taken into custody. Some reports initially suggested that a suspected shooter was at large. However, official word on more recent development is still awaited.
Disclaimer: Charlie Kirk’s suspected shooter has yet to be identified.
Utah Governor speaks out on Charlie Kirk’s shooting death
Calling Kirk’s death a “political assassination,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox also told reporters that a “person of interest” was being interviewed after being taken into custody. “That is not George Zinn,” he affirmed. When asked to share more information about the suspect being questioned behind closed door, he refused to divulge much.
“We cannot at this point, but we will get you that information when we can,” he continued. As for if a second person was involved in the Utah shooting, he said, “At this point, there is no information that would lead us to believe that there is a second person involved.”
The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with @fbi.
