Dogs are regarded as humans’ most devoted companions. It should come as no surprise that almost 65 million households in the US have a furry friend, as dogs are genuinely a member of the family. However, everyone is still wondering which breed is in America’s favourite.

Some interesting findings can be found in Rover’s 2025 Dog and Cat Breeds Report. According to Rover’s survey, which polled 1,000 pet owners nationwide, mixed-breed dogs, or “mutts,” have become the most popular breed in America.

Why is there an increased love for mutts?

In an era of designer dogs, it appears that the genuineness and individuality of these mixed breeds are what have won over so many people. Even though purebred dogs still have devoted fan bases, the popularity of mutts shows how pet ownership is changing.

After all, according to a study by Forbes Advisor, 42% of dog owners got their pets from retail establishments, and 38% resorted to animal shelters and rescues, a trend that is only getting stronger.

The traditional favourites are still in the lead despite the mutt’s victory. Third place goes to the classic, kind, and enduringly popular Golden Retriever, while the Labrador Retriever, a representation of loyalty and friendship, comes in second.

However, retrievers are not the only thing involved. The top ten are completed by German Shepherds, French Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus, and Yorkshire Terriers, all of whom are adored for their distinct characteristics and the unique bond they have with their families.

Which are the favourite dogs of Americans?

The Miniature Poodle has remained the most popular dog breed in 2025. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which has maintained third place for two years in a row, and the American Staffordshire Terrier, a breed renowned for its loyalty and protective instincts, are also making waves.

A growing interest in rarer dogs is another finding of Rover’s survey. The rarest breeds of the year were the Gordon Setter, Spinone Italiano, and Japanese Spitz, giving pet owners an opportunity to make a statement with a little something different.

Social media stars

As the most photogenic breed, the Pit Bull has gained popularity on social media including Instagram and TikTok due to its expressive eyes and athletic physique. The German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, two enduring favourites who never fail to win over hearts online, are not far behind in terms of social media popularity.

Known for their adorable appearances and eccentric personalities, French Bulldogs and Pugs are also enjoying online fame, with many owners showing off their antics to a curious public.

Beyond breed preferences, there is one quality that unites dog owners across the country: loyalty. In fact, 67% of survey respondents said loyalty is the most important trait they look for in a dog, followed by size, which is a deciding factor for 58% of pet parents.
