Walmart is serious about upgrading its tech workforce and it is evident from their newly revealed salary data. The retail giant is spending big while offering salaries as high as $286,000 for software engineers. The data shows that Walmart is now paying quite the competitive wages for roles like software development and project management, as it tries to match up with tech leaders like Amazon and Google.
More hires via H1-B visa programme
Online shopping and automation have become a necessity in today’s time and keeping that in mind, Walmart is investing heavily in its tech workforce to stay ahead. In just the first half of the year, Walmart hired around 1,750 employees through the H-1B visa programme. The company is clearly diversifying and reshaping its workforce to strengthen its digital and e-commerce services to stay ahead in the race.
According to a Business Insider report, a Walmart spokesperson said that the company offers more than just a salary. For example, employees may also get bonuses and stock options.

The data suggests that as of July 23, Walmart had about 45,000 job openings around the world. Most of these roles were in Walmart stores and Sam’s Club warehouses. Only about 550 of the openings were for tech and analyst positions.
Speaking of leveling up its tech workforce, Walmart had in July, hired a new Executive Vice President (EVP) for AI acceleration, product, and design, who now reports directly to the CEO. It is also looking to fill another top-level AI role.
The Business Insider report says that Walmart’s tech salaries are similar to what companies like Amazon offer for the same roles. Based on H-1B visa data, about half of Walmart’s white-collar jobs are in Bentonville, a third are in California, and the rest are spread across Texas, New Jersey, Washington, and Virginia.
