The United States will impose a 100% tariff on all movies made outside the country, US President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Monday.

He wrote, Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing “candy from a baby.” California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit! Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT.”

The move follows Trump’s statement in May, where he stated that the US movie industry as experiencing a “very fast death” due to foreign incentives attracting American filmmakers.

Back then he said, “This is a coordinated effort by other countries, and it’s a National Security threat. It’s also part of messaging and propaganda.” He further added that he was giving US agencies, like the Department of Commerce, the authority to start enforcing a 100% tariff on all movies made outside the US and brought into the country. Trump concluded saying, “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

Film and TV production in Los Angeles has dropped by almost 40% over the past decade, according to FilmLA, a non-profit that tracks production in the area.

At the same time, governments around the world have been offering bigger tax credits and cash rebates to attract more productions, aiming to take a larger share of the $248 billion expected to be spent globally on content production in 2025, according to Ampere Analysis.
