Despite getting off to a good start with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the US counterpart Donald Trump’s patience with him appears to be running thin. Just last month, the American leader called him “very kind.” However, the situation has completely flipped over as Putin continues to double down on drone and missile attacks in Ukraine, shutting out any room for Trump to broker a ceasefire.

Trump voices displeasure with Putin as Russia ramps up attacks on Ukraine

As someone who said he would end the war in Ukraine within the first 24 hours in office, Trump now seems to have turned his back on Putin. Amid their souring geopolitical dynamic, the US president spoke to reporters on what happened to be the first anniversary of his assassination attempt.

“I am very disappointed with President Putin,” he said. “I thought he was somebody that meant what he said — and he’ll talk so beautifully, then he’ll bomb people at night. We don’t like that.”

Trump to send patriots to Ukraine

Marking a significant U-turn from his prior declaration about arms delivery to Kyiv, Trump said, “We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need.”

Without offering much detail on how big of a delivery this would be for Ukraine, he added, “I haven’t agreed on the number yet, but they’re going to have some because they do need protection,” while coming back from the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey.

He asserted that the whole affair would be “business” for the United States, as they’re “basically going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military and they’re going to pay us 100% for them.”

As Russia continues to refute a ceasefire proposal, Trump even slammed Putin’s supposed hollow statements days ago, saying, “We get a lot of (expletive) thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth. He’s very nice to us all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”

All these big claims from Trump’s side come ahead of what the POTUS teased would be a “major statement… on Russia” on Monday.
