US President Donald Trump took aim at French Emmanuel Macron as the latter suggested that he left the G7 Summit in Canada early to work out a “ceasefire” between Israel and Iran.
He took to his Truth Social social media platform and dumped on his French counterpart, saying, “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran.”
Ceasefire not the reason why Trump left Canada early
Emphasising that Macron had gotten it all “Wrong!” Trump said that the French president had no idea why he was headed back to Washington, DC. “It certainly had nothing to do with a Cease Fire,” he added. “Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!”
Trump’s social media rant followed what he has since labelled Macron’s erroneous comments at the G7 Summit in Kananaskia, Canada. Earlier today, the French president said, “There is an offer that has been made, especially to have a ceasefire and to initiate broader discussions.”
While speaking to reporters in French at the summit, he added, “If the United States of America can achieve a ceasefire, it is a very good thing and France will support it and we wish for it.”
Trump and Macron meet at G7 Summit
Trump and Macron’s unexpected crossfire followed their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit. According to the French leader’s X post, the global politicians discussed their shared interest in “stabilising our trade relations and promoting growth and employment in each of our countries.”
Furthermore, they even talked about the need to exert pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire and negotiate peace of Ukraine. The urgent need for de-escalation between Israel and Iran while the Israel-Hamas war also continues to negatively impact civilians were other topics of prime concern.
