JD Vance made a vehement case against ‘mass migration’ on Monday — insisting that it was a “theft of the American dream”. The remarks came days after the US Vice President called for a significant slowdown in legal immigration and insisted that previous governments had allowed entry for ‘too many people’. The comments have since sparked furious backlash on social media as netizens noted that both the First and Second Lady of America had immigrant roots.
“Mass migration is theft of the American Dream. It has always been this way, and every position paper, think tank piece, and econometric study suggesting otherwise is paid for by the people getting rich off of the old system,” Vance wrote on X.
‘Curtail legal immigration’
Vance has emerged as a vehement critic of American immigration policies in recent weeks — calling for a massive slowdown during an event last week. He also lambasted the former President Joe Biden for allowing ‘too many people’ into the country. Vance claimed that the growing number of immigrants now threatened the social fabric of the United States. The Vice President insisted that the optimal number of legal immigrants to admit was “far less than what we’ve been accepting” without elaboration.
“When something like that happens, you’ve got to allow your own society to cohere a little bit, to build a sense of common identity, for all the newcomers — the ones who are going to stay — to assimilate into American culture. Until you do that, you’ve got to be careful about any additional immigration, in my view,” PBS quoted him as saying.
‘What about Usha Vance, Melania Trump?’
The comments have sparked backlash across social media platforms with netizens reminding that both Melania Trump and Usha Vance had immigrant roots. The First Lady had moved to the country from Slovenia in 2001 and continues to hold dual citizenship. Meanwhile Second Lady Usha Vance is the daughter of immigrant Indian parents who had relocated in the late 1970s or early 1980s.
“It’s hilarious that the two people running the country who are screaming about how immigration is ruining our country both have immigrant wives,” countered on X user.
“That means you have to send Usha, her Indian family, and your biracial kids back to India. Let us know when buy the plane tickets. You must lead by example,” fumed another.
