Gunshots erupted at an anti-Donald Trump ‘No Kings’ protest in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States on Saturday (US time), according to local authorities. The Salt Lake City Police Department leading the US shooting investigation near 200 S State Street.

According to the department’s official statement on X, at least one person was confirmed to have been critically injured during the shooting. “The patient has been taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries,” they added.

Law enforcement officials further revealed that “person of interest” was already in custody.

Salt Lake City’s local news outlet Fox 13 reported that the man who was arrested in connection to the No Kings protest shooting had blood on his hands. Visuals emerging from the scene show police officers handcuffing the yet-to-be-identified man. He was eventually put into an ambulance due to unspecified injuries.

Even Governor Spencer Cox has since responded to the incident. “The shooting at tonight’s protest in Salt Lake City is a deeply troubling act of violence and has no place in our public square,” he wrote on social media.

Similarly, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall wrote, “The violence we’ve seen today in Salt Lake City and elsewhere in the country is horrific—it’s just not who we are. We deserve to feel safe, especially when exercising our First Amendment rights.” Furthermore, she thanked the police department heading the investigation for their quick response.

Thousands of people attended the No Kings protest

Authorities initially estimated 4,000 people to be in attendance during the protests picking up from Pioneer Park. Expanding the X thread, the police department later notified the participation count was estimated to have gone up to 10,000 people. “Our officers are providing traffic control to help ensure the safety of participants and our community,” they tweeted at the time.

After notifying people about the near-fatal development near 200 South State Street, the Salt Lake City PD urged people to “leave the demonstration safely and orderly.”
